Building

Welcome to the Building section of our website. We like to build things and we value the independence that goes with it. I started working in construction (summer jobs) when I was a teenager. I worked on the rehab of apartment row houses in Boston’s South End. I didn’t know anything, but I was young and dumb and basically willing to do whatever I was asked. I carried lumber and drywall up and down stairs. The folks I worked for let me do demolition. I was wrecking out plaster and wood lathe walls. I got to hurl the demolished walls and ceilings out windows into the backyard. I was swinging big sledge hammers and crowbars. I thought I was super badass and I loved it. We hadn’t gotten the memo on the bad stuff in horse hair plaster yet; we never wore masks and blew black soot out of our noses for days after. Yikes! It was a start.

I have done construction on the side across much of my life. When you work in Fire and EMS you usually work a couple 24 hour shifts… you have lots of time for a second job. Although never a full time builder, the knowledge I have gained over the decades comes in handy here on our little farm. Kristine is learning too, she’s always willing to help and is fascinated with power tools. We built an addition to our garage in 2020 and will build another freestanding equipment garage in the next couple of years. But this time we are going to save some serious money by sawing (and drying) our own lumber. There may be a couple smaller sheds too; we have a couple antique tractors without a proper home and a lot of tractor implements. Building structures is not a hardship, I really enjoy it. There will be more entries going forward on these and other projects.

Going Solar

Going Solar

We have wanted to go solar for a while. Several factors contributed to doing it now. Solar is not cheap, so money was a factor. However, there is a 26% federal tax credit available now; we are saving a quarter of the cost. Deciding when to jump into the evolving...

The New Driveway… Phase 1

The New Driveway… Phase 1

I finally bought the sawmill I wanted in the spring of 2021. The sawmill is built on a trailer so it can be moved around. I also need to buy a tag along trailer to move my tractors so they can travel with the mill. The problem is the driveway at my house. It is fairly...

Adding a Garage Bay in 2020

Adding a Garage Bay in 2020

In the summer of 2020, the first COVID summer, I built another garage bay for the new Kubota tractor I had bought. I hired my friend Mike to help with the build. The truth be known, Mike is more knowledgeable than me, he has been a professional builder his whole life....
