Firewood
Welcome to the firewood section of our website. Firewood is a big part of our world and daily lives. Wood has been an important part of our heating fuel for years. We do our own tree harvesting, sometimes with help from a tree company for the really big trees but often without. We fell, saw and split our own firewood. It is a lot of work, but we like it and feel good about doing it. Firewood is part of the renewable energy equation. We have worked hard to reduce our carbon footprint and to be less wasteful. Our new solar array is going to be installed in the beginning of May 2022. We are going to try to share what we have learned about heating with wood. We are realistic and honest about how much work it is… it’s a lot of work. But for us and many others there is a real sense of satisfaction in working your own land. The sense of self sufficiency and self reliance is gratifying. It feels comforting to know that if supply chain problems get worse, if energy costs continue to skyrocket we will be less impacted than most. But there’s also this… we spend a lot of time outdoors including in the winter. It is wonderful to come in from the cold into a dry, toasty warm house. When you burn wood there is no such thing as keeping your house at 65°. Woodstoves crank out a lot of heat, the lower floor of our house where the kitchen, living/dining room and library are, is always at least 70° or more. It feels great. We sleep upstairs which is much cooler and more comfortable for sleeping.

We burn wood to supplement our oil heat. Our house is pretty green, and very environmentally friendly. It was built in the mid-eighties as a replica of early New England settler’s bow house. The house is a center chimney, center stair, post and beam bow roof cape....
