Food We Grow

Welcome to the Food We Grow section of our website. Kristine and I have gardened when we could over the years. There have been times in our lives when there simply was no place to garden. In 2020 we decided that we would put in a proper garden at the new house we had bought four years earlier. We had made this decision in the fall of 2019, it was not a response to the pandemic. The new garden has been secure, meaning Bambi and his friends who wander through our property all the time have not gotten in. The garden has been very productive. In the spring of 2022 we decided to double the size of the garden bring it to just over 1200 square feet. There is an entry in this section called “A New Kind of Garden” that explains the innovative raised bed system we put in the original garden section. The 2022 addition is partially in ground; a roughly 500 square foot section for potatoes with slightly raised row beds and another 175 feet with more raised round beds. This addition will be covered in a future entry.

Kristine is the Master Gardener, she is the brains behind this. She plants seeds indoors in late March and transfers them to the garden at the end of May. She is in charge of year to year crop rotation and plant and tree purchases when necessary. We planted two apple trees and two peach trees in the spring of 2022. She does most of the pruning and what little weeding needs be done. Our raised bed system is the most weed free garden I have ever seen. I help her as needed and handle much of the watering since I work from home.

The New Potato Patch

The New Potato Patch

We grew potatoes in one of the large diameter raised beds in 2021. We planted on planting weekend which is Memorial Day here in Zone 5B. They could have gone in earlier but we didn’t get to it. We had modest success; I think we harvested around 25 pounds of potatoes....

Victory Gardens

Victory Gardens

I wrote this piece for the Greenfield Spirit, our town wide newsletter in the spring of 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic. I’m including it here because it is in part about our homestead and I think of general interest to you, our readers. For more details on our...

A New Kind of Garden

A New Kind of Garden

In the spring of 2020, the first pandemic spring, we put in a new and innovative garden at our house. I have gardened off and on across my lifetime. Kristine and I had a small garden at our old house. For the last couple of years Kristine had a plot at the community...
